What is cosmetic vein treatment?

Cosmetic vein treatments have been developed at Vascular Vein Centers to eliminate unsightly veins in the skin of your legs. 

Unsightly veins are visible under your skin, showing through in shades of red, purple, or blue. These troublesome veins might also protrude from your skin.  

Usually, these veins are the tip of the iceberg and signal a more significant underlying problem. Using the latest in ultrasound imaging, we find underlying veins that need to be treated to ensure the best results with spider veins. The underlying venous insufficiency if not treated, will cause more spider veins and these will get bigger. 

Deeper, faulty veins are treated using laser therapy and specialized foam injections (Varithena). Once this process is complete, spider veins can be dealt with.

Vascular Vein Centers, in collaboration with GE Imaging, uses a high magnification probe which can detect small veins under the skin which cause spider veins. Using this technology, spider veins in the skin can be treated more precisely. We refer to the treatment as Ultrasound guided cosmetic sclerotherapy. 

Insurance will cover treatment of varicose veins, with swelling at the ankles or skin changes (dryness & discoloration) in most cases. They do not cover vein therapy for unsightly spider veins.

What causes unsightly veins?

The most common cause of unsightly skin veins is chronic venous insufficiency. This condition is caused by varicose veins and leads to skin changes, swelling, eventually lymphedema, and leg ulcers.

Chronic venous insufficiency develops when the valves in your veins become weak or damaged. These valves normally keep blood flowing back to your heart. If they aren't forming a tight seal, blood can flow back and pool in the veins of the lower leg. This causes vein enlargement and, in time, bulging of the veins and swelling at the ankle. Causes include inherited weakness of the vein wall, for women-pregnancy, jobs with prolonged standing, and being significantly overweight.
