Spider Veins Treatment and Causes

Stop hiding your legs due to the unsightly appearance of spider veins. At Vascular Vein Centers, our modern treatments are the best for removing these unsightly veins, eliminating their appearance and the cause of your symptoms with minimal downtime.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins (also called telangiectasias) are small superficial blood vessels in your skin. They get their name because their small, weaving appearance is similar to that of a spider web. In fact, spider veins most commonly appear as blue or purple web patterns on the legs and feet, inner and outer thighs, calves, back of the knees, the ankle area, and even on the face or nose.

Are Spider Veins A Warning Sign of Vein Disease?

Spider veins can be a warning sign of underlying vein disease, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Warmth or discomfort over the spider patterns in your skin evidence worsening symptoms needing vein treatment. Do your spider veins indicate high-risk factors for vein disease?

What Causes Spider Veins?

Many factors contribute to the development of spider veins.

  • Surgery

Some causes can be avoided or improved, but many of these factors are out of your control. Prolonged standing or sitting required by high vein disease risk professions can contribute to the development and reoccurrence of spider veins.

What Are Facial Spiders?

Facial spiders are tiny, red and blue veins that appear on your face. These veins often create red, bruise-like spots or lines on your nose, chin or cheeks. These tiny veins are in your skin and do not have the ability to repair themselves. Spider veins are frequently confused with rosacea, especially on the cheeks.

What Causes Facial Spider Veins?

Facial spider veins are permanently dilated capillaries. Several things can trigger this condition:

  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Age and heredity
  • Alcohol and smoking

What Are the Treatments for Spider Veins on the Face?

Facial spider veins are treated with a surface laser. The laser emits heat that causes the vessels to shrink and go away. Blue veins below the eye, on the other hand, are usually not treated with lasers, as they are deeper and generally not responsive to surface treatment.

Skin care, including sunscreen and products to help with discoloration, are also extremely important. Our full-time, in-house esthetician can guide you to the correct skin care products to best help improve the look and health of the skin on your face.

How to Prevent Spider Veins on the Nose and Face

Facial spider veins can be avoided with the proper care and treatment including:

  • Regularly hydrating your skin with moisturizers
  • Protecting your skin from sun damage with sunscreen (reapply frequently)
  • Avoiding excessive alcohol
  • Avoiding smoking
