Not all surgeons are board certified. Board certification by the ABS is a voluntary process that demonstrates a surgeon's commitment to lifelong learning and quality patient care. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of residency training following medical school, met all ABS training requirements, and successfully completed a comprehensive ABS examination process.

The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) provides accreditation programs for vascular testing, echocardiography, nuclear/PET, MRI, diagnostic CT, dental CT, carotid stenting and vein treatment and management. To earn a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) credential you must pass the PVI examination. The Physicians' Vascular Interpretation (PVI) examination tests basic vascular knowledge and skills essential to Sonography Professionals.
