Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is a simple procedure using an injection of a foamed sclerosing agent. The sclerosing agent irritates the lining of the vein and causes the vein to become inflamed. The inflamed vein dries up and is replaced with fibrous tissue, and disappears. Blood that once ran through these diseased veins finds another, healthier route, back to the heart.
These procedures generally take 15 minutes to perform. These are generally performed 2 weeks after the laser treatment and multiple sessions are usually required to treat the accessory veins. Compression stockings should be worn during treatment and you may return to your daily activities immediately after this procedure.
