Skin care for your legs
Caring for even moderate venous disease can be quite challenging. Many patients with venous disease experience swelling (edema) around the ankles, especially later in the day as a result of prolonged standing or sitting.
This swelling should not be ignored. Swelling can cause inflammatory proteins, red cells and white cells to go into the tissue around the ankle causing an inflammatory reaction. This part of the body does not have much fatty tissue for protection. As a result, the tissue can become dry and thickened over time and the skin can change to a pinkish color, especially after prolonged periods of standing.
Later, the skin changes to a thick texture and brown in color. The underlying tissue becomes increasingly firm and stiff. The tissue often becomes tender when a person has been standing a great deal. This is due to inflammation, although many people confuse the appearance and pain with an infection. Using antibiotics will not bring relief. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or Solarcaine spray can help the tenderness, itching, and inflammation. Aggressive lubrication should be applied to the skin.
Simple baby oil gel or Vaseline petroleum jelly is excellent to provide a “barrier” of protection to the skin. While a mineral oil based product like baby oil gel or Vaseline does not penetrate the skin, the gel leaves a lasting film that provides protection and softens the skin making it more resilient. (Also gives a great glow!) For daily use, put on a penetrating lotion or oil (ie: mink oil, Jojoba or sesame) and put the Vaseline gel overtop. This should be applied at least twice daily.
