Sclerotherapy for treatment of spider veins requires a step-by-step elimination process in which an understanding of the complexity and anatomy of the venous system is necessary. A multilevel approach is sometimes necessary to ensure long term results. The spider veins must be examined with a vein light. This is an intense light source which shows the feeder veins that need to be eliminated to have the best most enduring results.
Vascular Vein Centers uses a combination of laser and injection sclerotherapy to eliminate the spider veins and the feeder vein network (called reticular or blue veins). The laser primarily closes down the surface spider veins, and injection of sclerosant is used to close the underlying feeder veins.
Most Sclerotherapy Treatments Last 30-45 Minutes
A sclerotherapy session is relatively quick, lasting approximately 30-45 minutes. After changing into shorts, you will be asked to lie down on the examination table. The skin over your spiders will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and the practitioner will begin the treatment. You will need to change your position as necessary to treat your spider patterns. You may feel small needle sticks similar to mosquito bite or a mild burning sensation. After treatment, compression stockings will be placed on your legs and you will be instructed to walk and resume normal activities with the exception of aerobic exercise.
Multiple treatment sessions are often necessary. Some spider patterns are extremely difficult to eliminate completely. Sclerotherapy can enhance your condition and appearance, however, it is unrealistic to believe that every spider vein will disappear completely with treatment. Sclerotherapy can eliminate visible veins, however, with time new spider vein patterns may appear.
